The story of Blair Burton Interiors’ very first client.

Blair Burton on the entry steps of 2102 Eva St. Our first home.
Blair on the stoop of 2102 Eva St., where the dream of Blair Burton Interiors first began to take shape.

“I just wish someone would call me and ask me to help them with their home.”

It was a cold January morning in 2004 in our tiny bungalow in Austin’s SoCo neighborhood. I had slept late. Blair handed me a cup of coffee to wake me up, and that’s what she said.

Some wishes sound like faint hopes—like the part of us that imagines winning the lottery.

Others come from somewhere deeper. From that place where desire meets calling.

They don’t sound like wishes. They sound like something closer to a resolution.

At the time, I thought Blair’s was the first kind.

Looking back now, I know it was the second.

We had just decided that Blair working as my assistant in my financial planning business wasn’t working.

She needed something more creative. And I needed to learn how to be a better boss.

Before that, she had worked for one of Austin’s top interior designers, Karen Hall. Before that, she was a fourth-grade teacher at Regents School of Austin. Before that, she sold furniture at Interiors of Austin.

If I’m being honest, the path seemed obvious to me.

She’d always wanted to do interior design.

She’d been around it her whole life—her dad was a custom home builder, her mom an entrepreneur with a great eye.

It felt like time.

So I went into action mode.

“Can I build you a website?”

No.

“What do you want to call it?”

Not sure.

“How about business cards?”

Not interested.

Her plan was simpler.

“I just want someone to call me and ask me to help them with their home.”

Now, my background was in sales—fundraising, commercial real estate, life insurance. The kind of work where nothing happens unless you go make it happen.

So before I could stop myself, I said what I believed to be true:

“Yeah… that’s not how this works. No one is just going to call you out of the blue. You at least have to tell people what you’re doing.”

Silence.

Then she said it again.

“I just wish someone would call me and ask me to help them with their home.”

And that was that.

A few days later, I’m having breakfast with our pastor, Bill Boyd, at the original Magnolia Cafe on Lake Austin Boulevard.

He asks about Blair.

I tell him the whole story.

Her exact words.

And then I add, half laughing:

“I mean, Bill… no one is just going to call her out of the blue and ask for help with their home… right?”

I expected him to laugh with me.

He didn’t.

He just looked at me. Calm. Thoughtful. A little smile forming.

Then he picked up his phone, clicked a few buttons, and to my great surprise, put the phone to his ear.

And then, with a wink at me, spoke these words:

“Hey Blair. It's Bill. I know this is kinda out of the blue. But Martha and I just bought our first home… and we need some help.”

4800 Eagle Feather Drive. Blair's first project, and our second home.
Blair's first project, 4800 Eagle Feather, later became our second home.

That was Blair’s first client.

She helped them choose paint colors, finishes, furnishings—everything. Charged a small flat fee.

Did a great job.

And word started to spread.

Because that’s what happens when people gather in homes that feel good to be in.

One client led to another.

Eventually, that led to a a beautiful family retreat on the Frio River with collaborators who would remain trusted creative partners for over two decades. That home would later be published in LUXE Interiors + Design.

And the rest is history.

Frio River Family Retreat, the first major project of Luxury Interior Designer, Blair Burton.
Blair’s first large project—and still one of our favorite places to visit—later made the cover of LUXE Interiors + Design. We still get referrals from this project almost 20 years later.

Looking back, I’ve thought about that moment a lot.

Blair didn’t need a website.

She didn’t need a brand.

She didn’t even need business cards.

But she did need one thing I didn’t recognize at the time.

She needed to speak the desire out loud.

She told me her dream.

And without realizing it, I carried it straight to the person who needed to hear it.

Maybe that’s how this works more often than we think.

Some call it luck.

Some call it timing.

I think sometimes a dream just needs a voice.
